Nathaniel Abreu, Cellist
A rising star whose artistry has earned him top honors across the country, including the 2024 Oberlin Conservatory Concerto Competition. From Boston to Austria, Nathaniel’s performances captivate audiences with both technical brilliance and expressive depth. Tonight, he brings that same passion to our stage.
Cellist Nathaniel Abreu is a National Young Arts Foundation Winner and has won First Place in numerous other competitions including the 2024 Oberlin Conservatory Concerto Competition, the Philharmonic Society of Arlington Young Artist Competition, the Concord Orchestra Ehlers Young Artist Concerto Competition, and the New England Conservatory Prep Concerto Competition.
He was also awarded the 2022 Agnew Bach Prize by the Cleveland Cello Society. An enthusiastic chamber and orchestral musician, Nathaniel Abreu holds the Eugene Lehner Chamber Music Award, and played in NYO-USA, the National Youth Orchestra of the United States.
Summer festivals also include the Heifetz International Music Institute, Internationales Orchesterinstitut Attergau in Austria, Yellow Barn Young Artist Program, Bowdoin International Music Festival, and the String Quartet Workshop and Young Artists Orchestra programs of the Boston University Tanglewood Institute.
Nathaniel Abreu currently attends Oberlin Conservatory in Ohio where he studies cello with Dmitry Kouzov and orchestral repertoire with Paul Kushious. When in Boston, he enjoys performing with the Lowell Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Orlando Cela. Other teachers have included Sam Ou (cello), Mickey Katz (orchestral repertoire), Eyran Katzenelenbogen (Jazz improvisation), Jim Gutman (Klezmer), and Rebecca Reed (Baroque cello). When not playing music, he enjoys baseball and close-up magic.
